Ferryboat FC vs. Belstead
30/05/10
ISFL League Match
3-2
WEATHER: Windy
REF: Steve Smith 7/10
Cards – N/A
Ferryboat had to leave fortress Walton Rec this week as the goals had been taken down so instead they played host to Belstead at Eastwood Ho. With Ferry still trying desperately to arrange one remaining home game against Hadleigh they knew the league title could not be decided today with a win but a defeat would gift it to Unicorn. Ferry were strengthened this week with Lewis returning for the absent Turley and Top scorer Smith coming back up top and Davies dropping to the bench. In a tactical reshuffle Sarigul moved wide and Jacobs came Infield to join Ray and Young with the back 5 remaining unchanged.
The first half proved to be an even affair and the longer it went on the more likely the first goal would prove to be crucial. Belstead were causing a few problems with their midfield being advanced and Ferry weren’t helping their cause by gifting possession to easily to the visitors and allowing them to get goal side of the midfield too early. As the home side started to rectify this they began to take control of the game and when they got the ball down and played a simple passing game they looked far and away the better side. The best example of this lead to the opening goal as they worked the ball from defence through midfield to the left side and then switched play patiently across the Belstead backline where Jacobs slid a lovely through ball in for Sarigul who unselfishly squared the ball for Lewis to tap home his 15 goal of the season, that added to his 20 assists was a great effort for the wide man. 1-0. Ferry survived a few scares and showed some great defending to come in at half time with a one goal lead. With the game still tight Ferry knew they would have to go up a few gears to put some distance between themselves and a very good Belstead team who could boast victories over Kirton and Unicorn in recent times.
The home side got the start to the second half they wanted and instantly took hold of the midfield battle and started working the ball into the dangerous wide positions that they looked more likely to exploit. Belstead remained in the game through hard work and their big forward and advanced midfielder were causing problems despite being well marshalled by Parry, Wooby and Young between them. The second goal would come for Ferry via a decisive counter attack. Wooby made a great tackle in the box to deny the Belstead target man a scoring chance and the ball fell to Lewis on the edge of the box. Lewis hooked it clear to Sarigul on the right wing who had a clear run into the away half, he worked his way into the box and again squared it to Smith this time to roll home his 26th goal of the season and his best scoring season for ferryboat to Date. 2-0.
Ferry missed a few more opportunities to extend their lead on the break but did make one count when Sarigul scored a solo effort which was a good reward for setting up the other 2 goals. 3-0.
Ferry seemed to have control of the Belstead attacks now but were being wasteful with their own attacks, often holding the ball too long or trying to go alone when other options were on. It had a feel of an end of season hunt for goals rather than the team passing game that has served them well all season. With 15 minutes to go Davies came on for Young and Burt came on for Barrell.
Ferry seemed to lose their way in search of goals and were becoming increasingly stretched which made for a tense finish as twice Belstead worked balls round and across the Ferry defence for easy finishes past the exposed Algar.
Ferry did hold out however for a 3-2 home win. They would have to wait and see if the Hadleigh game could be arranged or wait for the leagues decision as to whether they would regain the title they won 2 years ago or not. Either way it has been a great season and Ferryboat FC have once again exceeded people’s expectations and only lost 3 league games which was some achievement.
Man of the Match went to Young who had his best game to date for Ferryboat hassling well in the midfield to nullify the threat from the big Belstead Central midfielder and playing a big Part in Ferry’s passing game. Sarigul was a very close second with a goal and 2 assists showcasing his importance to the team. An honourable mention to Parry and Wooby who had another solid game together as their defensive partnership continues to impress.

Ferryboat FC vs. Kirton
23/05/10
ISFL League Match
2-4
WEATHER: HOT
REF: Steve Smith 6/10
Cards – N/A
Ferryboat and Kirton turned up at Walton Rec for a game of massive importance to both sides, Ferryboat still in the hunt for the title and Kirton playing their last ever game against their old rivals. Kirton had probably their strongest squad at their disposal while Ferry who were hampered with Injuries and players away showed their great team spirit to round up a bare but strong 11.
The game started at a good tempo and some good football seemed to be on the cards. Kirton settled into their passing game quicker and were getting Andy Crump and Jimmy Andrews on the ball at will which was a worry for the ferry central 3. Ferry were too spread out early on which was limiting their passing options and gifting Kirton far too much space. The home side were also aggravated as a lot of soft decisions were going against them but despite that neither side were creating clear cut chances. In an attempt to get control of the game Ferry had a reshuffle with Turley coming into the middle and Young going out wide right. It would be Ferry who snatched the lead late on in the first half as Steve Ray beat Andy Crump in the air and a rare Kirton mistake at the back allowed Jacobs through who took the ball on the bounce and lobbed the stranded keeper with a great finish. 1-0.
It stayed that way till half time and ferry came in with a lead but some things to improve on to win the game.
The second half began and it wasn’t long till Kirton levelled the game as they put early pressure on Ferry and pounced on a poor clearance at the back to find the net. 1-1.
It stayed in the balance at 1-1 for a while and could go either way with the next goal critical. It was the away side that snatched it when a corner bounced around the box and a Kirton player looped a header over Algar and the unlucky Ryan on the line who couldn’t quite leap high enough to clear.. 1-2.
Ferry had to gamble and commit men forward as they knew they needed the points but this allowed Kirton to soak up the pressure and counter and this worked out again for them as they broke quickly down the left and crossed to the far post where they had a man ready and waiting to dispatch an effort powerfully into the far corner. Ferry had another reshuffle with Young coming back into the middle and Sarigul moving wide in an attempt to utilise this pace. It wasn’t long before Ferry benefitted from the change with Sarigul getting away on the right and combining brilliantly with the ever dangerous Jacobs to carve through the Kirton back line, Jacobs then rolled it square for Sarigul to guide home side footed for 2-3. It was suddenly Ferry who looked the more dangerous although Kirton were never out of the game. Chances came and went as Ferry pushed hard and committed men forward but too many chances were wasted with bad decisions or final delivery being the downfall. Ferry’s best chances were yet to come as first Captain Steve Ray who had lead by example all game and been dominant in the air burst from midfield to close down the Kirton defender and then showed more desire to get to the ball first but was then taken down in the box by a sliding challenge only for the referee to claim the defender got the ball despite their seeming to be no diversion in the path of the ball at all. Next up it was Young denied his first goal for the club as Turley swung in a teasing free kick and Parry jumped with the keeper who spilt the ball to Young who tapped the ball home from 2 yards with his knee into the roof of the net, but the Ref had decided Parry had fouled the keeper which seemed a touch harsh. Probably the best chance of the game fell to Young again as a Ray throw in was flicked on by the hard working Davies and Young burst through without being tracked, he took a good touch to steady himself then attempted to slide it past the keeper who saved smartly with his feet but maybe Young could have taken the chance earlier. Almost predictably Kirton scored to kill the game off as Ferry gambled sending men forward for a corner, Kirton countered at speed and looked to play in Andy Crump, Ryan beat him there for pace but Crump showed greater strength to muscle him off the ball and go on to round Algar and tap in for 2-4.
It was a great way for Kirton to end their existence as a club and they will be missed in the league and by Ferryboat in particular for their competitive but friendly local rivalry.
Ferryboat worked hard but weren’t clinical or organised enough on the day. The title is still there to be won so they will pick themselves up and go into the next game with the same belief and desire that has got them into this position.
Man of the Match was Kevin Jacobs who despite playing on the left seemed to pop up everywhere and was involved in everything good Ferry created. He capped his performance with a goal and assist.

Ferryboat FC vs. Capel
16/05/10
ISFL League Match
5-1
WEATHER: Sunny
REF: Steve Smith 9/10
Cards – N/A
The important games keep coming for Ferryboat as they continue to chase their second ISFL Premier Division crown in 3 years. The opposition would prove to be familiar as they hosted Capel in a reverse of last week’s fixture which saw Ferry run out 2-1 winners in a cagey game. It was perfect weather for football but the hard ground did make it difficult for the players.
Ferry had to reshuffle with a few players absent and some returning. The back 4 was the same and Ray was joined in the middle by the returning Sarigul and Jacobs, the latter after an ankle ligament injury was a very welcome return. James Turley also returned to the line-up on the right with Smith taking his usual place up top and Lewis continuing on the left.
The game started at a good pace with both sides looking to play attacking football which resulted in early chances at both ends. It was the home side however that struck first as Sarigul poked the ball through for Jacobs to score a one-on-one and start his comeback from injury in the perfect manner. 1-0.
Ferry doubled the lead shortly after with a strong contender for goal of the season as a slick passing move involving Ray, Ryan, Lewis and Smith lead to a deep cross that found the unmarked Turley to strike a scorching half volley. 2-0.
The away side fought hard to get back into the game and were unfortunate to see a header come back of the bar after Ray had unusually lost his marker.
Half Time 2-0.
Ferry started the 2nd half as they had finished the 1st and soon extended their lead after good work by the goal making machine Lewis on the wing who crossed for Smith to flick home from close range. 3-0.
A 4th goal was added and in some style after Ryan played Sarigul in down the left who planted one foot and swept the other behind it to cross ‘ala Joe Cole’ to Smith who nodded in at the near post. 4-0.
Capel briefly threatened a comeback when a pass slid through from midfield found their striker who fired a shot across Algar and into the far corner. 4-1.
The Champions elect closed the game out with a 5th 10 minutes from time when Ray took the ball down on the edge of the box, drove past a defender before putting it on a plate for Davies to tap home. 5-1, final score.
Man of the match was awarded to maxi Sarigul who impressed in a good team performance with 2 assists.
3 games to go and with Unicorn losing to Hadleigh this week the title is there for the taking for Ferryboat FC.

Capel vs. Ferryboat FC
09/05/10
ISFL League Match
1-2
WEATHER: Cold and Dry
REF: Mike Moir 8/10
Cards – N/A
Ferryboat travelled to their last away game of the season against Capel knowing only a win would be good enough as they battle it out with Unicorn for the title. With injuries and players unavailable Ferry had to dig deep to get a team together and matters weren’t helped when Lewis, Parry and Beer decided to take a detour via Colchester!!
Ferry had to reshuffle the team with Smith moving to the right and Davies coming in up front, Bateman and Young joined Captain Ray in the midfield. The returning Burt who is coming back after a hamstring injury was joined by Beer on the bench.
It was a slow start to the game by both teams and Ferry were showing a few signs of nerves in such an important game for the club. Both teams were knocking the ball long at times with Capel’s back four given far too much time on the ball but Parry and Wooby dealt well with anything that came their way. When Ferry did get the ball down and play they looked by far the better side. Lewis and Smith were looking the best outlets and fed well off Davies’ hold up play. It was the visitors who created the best shooting chances of the first half but were only able to strike them directly at the keeper who showed solid handling all game. 0-0 Half time.
Ferry regrouped at half time and knew that had to show more fight if they were going to win the game and keep themselves in the hunt for the title. It seemed to have the desired effect as they broke the deadlock within minutes of the kick off. Ryan cut in field from left back and reversed a through ball past the Capel back line to release Lewis who calmly slotted home his 14th goal of the season despite the keeper getting a hand to it. 0-1.
The home side were stunned with the speed of the goal and were unable to get a foothold in the game despite their best efforts and largely due to the impressive performances on Wooby and Parry in the heart of the Ferry defence who were putting everything they had into repelling the Capel attacks. Despite carving out numerous chances Ferry were unable to extend their lead seeing chances from Smith and Bateman fired straight at the keeper and Ray and Davies putting chances over the bar. They were made to pay as Capel broke quickly and floated a cross into the away box for their tall midfielder to ghost in and head home. 1-1. Ferry knew they had to push on for the win as a draw would not be good enough but seemed unable to find the final ball. There was a comedy moment to savour as Ferry broke down the right with Davies who tried to release Ray with a flick over his own head only to smash himself in the face and concede a throw in….Classic! With the end of the game closing in it took a piece of Magic from Ferry’s top scorer smith as he got on the end of a Ryan throw and turned his defender, knocked the ball calmly round the keeper and collected to drive home from a tight angle. 1-2. It was Smith’s 23rd goal of a great season personally and gave Ryan his second assist of the match. Ferry stood firm to take a hard fought and vital 3 points and will need to repeat the trick next week as they host Capel in the reverse fixture.
Great performances from Smith and Lewis with match winning goals, Ryan with 2 assists and an accomplished display but it was Parry who narrowly beat his defensive partner Wooby to MOTM the match with a commanding and committed performance.

Unicorn vs. Ferryboat FC
18/04/10
ISFL League Match
3-2
WEATHER: SUNNY and WARM
REF: Darrell Goddard 5/10
Cards – Parry, Sarigul
Ferryboat made the long trip up the A14 to Chilton Fields to play 2nd place Unicorn in a massive game that could go a long way to deciding where the ISFL Premier Division title ends up his season.
With a few injuries and late call offs Ferry had to shuffle things around a bit but stuck to the formation that has led to 7 straight league wins. The returning Wooby slotted in at centre back with Barrell shuffling across to right back and Young switching to left back. The impressive midfield 3 of Ray, Sarigul and Jacobs from the Ascio game last time out remained the same and Ryan joined Smith and Lewis from left back to make up the top 3.
Ferryboat spoke before the kick off about getting the ball wide and putting early pressure on Unicorn but it was the home side that started quicker and imposed their pressing game on Ferry to force some early nervousness. Ferry steadied themselves and although Unicorn were not allowing them time on the ball it was Ferry who looked more threatening when they did break forward. It was a tight game which was unsurprising given the importance to both sides. Early signs were appearing that the ref was losing control of the game and it was Unicorn who were most unhappy first half. The visitors won a free kick all of 30 yards out, which again Unicorn were aggrieved about, and as everyone setup for a deep cross Lewis smashed a thunderbolt shot into the top corner leaving the keeper no chance for a 1-0 lead. Both sides battled hard till half time but no further goals came and although neither team settled into any rhythm of play Ferry had looked the more comfortable and maybe just deserved their lead.
Having had a chance to regroup at half time Ferry looked far more positive for the first 15 minutes on the second half but were unable to capitalise missing 3 good chances to extend the lead. As it always seems to be the case in football they were punished minutes later as Unicorn worked the ball into the box and guided it goal wards, Algar in the visitors goal was unsighted and reacted well but could only parry it away and the Unicorn midfielder was able to nod in from close range to level the game at 1-1. Just as Ferry looked to regroup they were dealt a cruel blow as Unicorn broke quickly through the middle and having beaten a few players their forward was tripped by Parry. Having won the free kick the Unicorn forward got up and squared up to Parry and for some reason decided to lick the defenders face. Parry took understandable offense and raised a hand to his face to push him away. Referee Darrell Goddard stepped in and claimed not have seen the ‘Lick’ but had seen the push 2 seconds later and felt he had no choice but to send the Ferry vice captain off, it’s just a shame he wasn’t as consistent with all his decision. It went from bad to worse for the away side as Unicorn tucked the resulting free kick into the corner for 2-1 lead. Ferry reshuffled slightly with Ryan dropping to left back, Young switching to right back and Barrell moving into centre back alongside Wooby. Unicorn immediately looked more threatening on the break but Ferry still managed to carve out a couple of chances that they feel they could have made count. As Ferry pushed hard to get back in the game the home side broke down the right and fired a cross to the far post for an easy tap in, 3-1.
Ferry did show there fighting spirit and never gave up earning their reward 5 minutes from time with their best passing move of the match resulting with Barrel coming out from the back to feed the ball to Smith’s feet, the inform striker turn smartly onto his left footed and slammed a superb shot in off the keepers left hand post to give Unicorn a nervous finish. The home side held on however to take back the advantage in the title race but there are still enough games left for a few more twists and turns.
Ferryboat will have to wait a fortnight to bounce back with a home game against Hadleigh RBL and will hope that local rivals Kirton can do them a favour next week against Unicorn. On the positive side for Ferryboat it was only their second league defeat of the season and a tight one at that and there were solid displays from Wooby, Barrell, Ray, Lewis and Smith. No Man of the Match this week as it was a disappointing loss and no one player stood out from the rest.

Ascio vs. Ferryboat FC
11/04/10
ISFL League Match
2-4
WEATHER: WINDY but SUNNY
REF: Sean Kilbourne 7/10
Cards – Phillips
Ferryboat made their way to Ascio’s Knight Road ground looking to add to their 6 game winning streak in an important game in the title race. With Turley and Wooby away there were a few changes to the line up with Ryan returning at left back, Barrell moving to centre back and Young coming in at right back. In a tactical change Phillips moved to the left and Jacobs came in field behind smith.
Rod Ray’s message to his team was to carry on from where they had left of in recent weeks by pressing the opposition and showing commitment and work rate as well as trying to replicate the performance that saw them beat Ascio 4-1 in the Home tie a few weeks earlier.
Captain Steve Ray lead from the front early on and although he conceded a free kick on the half way line inside 2 minutes his no nonsense tackle set the tone that showed the Ferryboat players what was expected in a tough game. Both teams took a while to settle and adjust to the windy conditions and bobbly surface. Smith was causing early problems to the Ascio defence so their centre back tried to distract him by asking what Shampoo he used! It back fired as minutes later Ferry took the lead when a miss hit Sarigul free kick bounced into Jacobs in the box who showed great touch and composure to turn past 2 defenders in the box and lift his finish over the on rushing keeper for 0-1. Ferry kept pushing hard and were keeping Ascio at bay. The second goal did not come in the first half and Ferry were dealt the cruellest of blows seconds before half time when they failed to clear a long throw and an Ascio player arrived on to the flick on to head home from 4 yards. 1-1 at half time.
Ferryboat were gutted to have lost a goal so close to half time but have a new belief instilled by their long unbeaten run and came out second half determined to get the result. It wasn’t long before Ferry profited from a long throw of their own, Smith launching one into the Ascio box and Phillips punched to nod in. 1-2. The game was evenly balanced and the next goal would be vital and Ferry looked to more dangerous in the final third with the Ferry defence offering Ascio few opportunities on goal. It was Ferry who extended their lead as Sarigul showed great energy to close down and steal the ball from an Ascio midfielder, not satisfied with that he drove forward and fed Lewis who had come infield for the ball, Lewis turned cleverly on the left side on the box and delivered a quality ball to Smith at the near post who flicked home a difficult header and made it look easy. 1-3. Just when they should have been cementing a 2 goal cushion Ferryboat fell asleep from the kick off and allowed Ascio time in midfield to play a simple ball over the middle of the defence and allowed the Ascio forward to race through and lift the ball over Algar and in off the post for 2-3. The away team steadied themselves and pushed hard to restore their 2 goal lead and managed it with 15 minutes remaining. Sarigul got behind the Ascio defence and drove a cross along the six yard line which came to Smith to smash home for his second of the game. 2-4. Ferry then replaced the impressive Jacobs with Bateman to tighten up the midfield for the last 10 minutes and he joined in well to clear up any Ascio attacks with some important headers and interceptions. It finished 2-4 with Ferry securing another vital win and an impressive league double over their title rivals and a strong Ascio team.
Man of the match was Jacobs who’s direct dribbling style caused problems all game coupled with his work rate and impeccable touch. Special mentions to Ray who nullified the threat of Ascio’s playmaker Churchyard all game and Smith who underlined his importance to the team with 2 goals and led the line impressively as usual.
Unicorn away next for Ferryboat as each game gets more important towards the end of the season.

Woodbridge AFC vs. Ferryboat FC
04/04/10
ISFL League Match
0-7
WEATHER: WINDY with SUNNY SPELLS
REF: Brennan Butcher 8/10
Cards – N/A
Ferryboat travelled to the Woodbridge Town ground to face Woodbridge AFC for the second time in 3 Weeks. Manager Rod Ray had his strongest squad of the season available of 14 players and had to make one enforced change to the starting 11 with Turley coming in at left back for the unavailable Ryan and Friel, Bateman and Young on the bench. Phillips was giving a free role behind the front 3 and Ray and Sarigul played as orthodox centre midfielders.
The match started at a slow pace with both teams struggling to find any rhythm in their play but it was soon sparked into life when a long clearance on 10 minutes from Algar in the Ferry goal was pulled down nicely by Smith who raced clear to beat the keeper for a 1-0 Ferry lead. Woodbridge attempted to hit back immediately but put 2 sharp chances wide. Ferry took the warning and moved up the gears as the half went on to take total control of the match lead by Ray, who was dominant in the air and particularly Sarigul who was snapping into tackles and giving the opposition no time on the ball.
The second goal came 5 minutes later as a Lewis corner went all the way through to Phillips who struck a snap shot into the far corner with style. It was 3-0 on the half hour mark as some neat Ferryboat build-up play saw the ball spread wide to the right footed stand in left back Turley who curled a fantastic left footed cross into Jacobs who guided it home nicely. Ferry struck again 5 minutes later, as they did after the first goal, Smith adding his second after a cut back from Phillips who beat 2 defenders to reach the by-line. Phillips then added his second of the game on the stroke of half time for 5-0 when another great kick from Keeper Algar beat the defence and Phillips converted the one-on-one. Rather than ease up before half time Ferry kept pushing and won another corner which was whipped in by Lewis whose delivery was dangerous all half and Jacobs pounced at the back post to drive home for a 6-0 Ferryboat lead.
Woodbridge came out determined to stop the rot in the second half and defended much better in the second half and were more combative in the midfield but failed to really test the Ferry defence who stood firm and dealt with everything thrown at them all game comfortably.
It was 15 minutes into the second half before Ferryboat were able to add to their lead and it was one of 3 players chasing a hat trick who managed to convert, Smith finding the corner having been found by Jacobs. With a 7-0 lead and three subs itching to get on Lewis and Sarigul were replaced by Friel and Bateman on 65 minutes and Smith by Young on 70 minutes. After a slight re-shuffle Ferry looked to press home their advantage and their cause was helped by the Woodbridge keeper who was booked twice for descent after complaining to the referee about offside decisions and other decisions that weren’t going their way. That seemed to set the tone for Woodbridge as they began to argue with the Referee and each other and picked up a few more yellows before the game was over. The stand in Keeper performed admirably to deny Friel, Bateman, Ray and Jacobs twice to keep the score down. A few of the Ferry players might feel they could have finished better though.
Lots of positives from the game with a clean sheet and solid defensive display, great link up play by Lewis and Phillips first half that caused Woodbridge all sorts of trouble and Smith leading the line was a constant threat and scored his fourth Hat Trick of the season!
Sarigul, who was at the heart of everything Ferry did, claimed the Man of the Match award for his Energetic and committed display which set the tempo for a great Ferryboat display.

Ferryboat FC vs. Whitton
28/03/10
ISFL League Match
3-1
WEATHER: Sunny, with a little bit of wind.
REF: Tony Joyce -7/10
Cards – n/a
Ferry continued their great form with an excellent win over Whitton Maypole, Tony Joyce was the referee in control of today’s match, the game started slowly with Maypole having the better of the possession with Ferry hitting on the counter numerous times, Ferry took the lead when a free kick was awarded about 25 yards out and Lewis stepped up and drilled the ball through a crowd of players to find the bottom left corner of the net. 1-0. Maypole were back in the game within 5 minutes of kick off when they built play well down the right to cut back for a simple tap in. 1-1 Tackles were strong and the Ref made note of a couple of Whitton players mainly for dissent as they got even more frustrated as the Ferry defence stood strong. Half time 1-1
The 2nd half started franticly and Whitton were unlucky not to take the lead as they shot wide and were called offside as a striker ran through on goal, but it was Ferryboat that took the lead once again with a great ball down the right by Barrell for Lewis to run on to, he then fired the ball across the goal mouth for Smith to slide in and smash home. 2-1. Turley was introduced for Jacobs with Phillips pushing wide left where he tormented the Whitton right back, Whitton were still having a lot of possession but Ferry were limiting it to their back four and it wasn’t long before Sarigul pressured them into making a mistake and put the ball wide to Lewis who took the shot early on the half volley and finished with the sweetest of shots with the outside of his right boot which the keeper could only stand and admire.3-1. The third goal pushed the game out of the grasps of Whitton who were now arguing. A strong challenge from Ray lead to another Maypole player being booked yet again for descent, Bateman then came on for Smithy, with Bateman going into the heart of the midfield and Ray pushing up top, further chances fell to various Ferry players one of which being Ray who hit the post, they were unable to improve on their lead with the game finishing 3-1 and another impressive 3 points for the Premier league leaders.
Ferry are looking a tough side to break down this year and are also look great going forward, everyone at Ferryboat FC should be proud of themselves sitting top of the Premier league and to hold a great unbeaten record at home.

Ferryboat FC vs. Ascio
21/03/10
ISFL League Match
4-1
WEATHER: Sunny/warm
REF: Paul Andrews - 9/10
Cards – PARRY
Ferryboat made one change to the starting line up with Barrell replacing the injured Burt at right back. Paul Andrews got the game underway and within minutes a strong challenge from Ray seemed to show Ascio that Ferry meant business. The passing was good and the defence was looking strong. Several chances were wasted by Ferry and a couple of good efforts were put goal bound by Smith and Sarigul. Ascio had their best chance to take the lead when a long throw wasn’t dealt with and Ferry cleared off the line in a goal mouth scramble, Wooby was dominating in the air and on the floor at the back and Barrell was doing well to deal with attacks down the right .Ferry were soon on the attack again and looked hungry for goals and the first came when Sarigul found Lewis in the box with a pass and he found the bottom corner for 1-0. Some persistent pressure shortly after from Sarigul again paid off where he found Jacobs this time who beat the keeper to the ball and scored the 2nd.
Half-time 2-0.
The 2nd half started pretty much the same as the first with Ascio not showing much fight and Ferry totally dominating play, it was soon 3-0 when a corner which was only half cleared by Ascio fell to Lewis who then chipped the ball back into the far post to find Parry unmarked with a diving header. 3-0. Ferry didn’t stop there Phillips was pushed up field and immediately caused problems to the Ascio defence with his skilful dribbling. Ascio were then awarded a penalty when there player seemed to be fouled by a sliding challenge from Sarigul, the player did look to go down easy and Parry was booked for descent. Churchyard stepped up and struck the ball hard and central but was no problem for Algar as he saved well with Ryan first to the rebound. Ferry then increased their lead to 4-0 with an Ascio short goal kick being closed down well by Sarigul who back heeled to find Lewis who then found Ray in acres of space for a simple one on one side foot finish. Ascio then scored what was only a consolation goal as there striker lobbed Algar to make it 4-1. A long ball from Algar found Smith clear but one too many touches and pushed wide by the defender made the angle hard to finish and he shot wide. A great result from Ferryboat in front of a strong watching crowd.
Man of the match – Neil Wooby. Not too sure he actually got beat in the air once.

Ferryboat FC vs. Woodbridge AFC

ISFL League Match
4-1
WEATHER: Cloudy/Windy
REF: Nigel Budinger - 2/10
Cards – JAMIE LEWIS
Ferry welcomed Woodbrige to the Rec today in a league game refereed by Nigel Budinger. The game started at its usual frantic pace, Ferry lined up with there now more familiar three in the middle formation looking to dominate the centre midfield once again. 5 minutes in to the match Jamie Lewis received a yellow card for retaliating to a late tackle. Chances were falling to various Ferry players including Steve Ray who should of done better after bringing the ball down beautifully only to put the ball wide of the target one on one. Ferry where then forced to make a sub when Matty Burt pulled up sprinting for a stray pass, John Barrell was introduced. Woodbridge were first to break the deadlock with a corner from the right which was not dealt and was flicked to the far post for the tall centre half to nod in for 0-1. Ferry pushed for an equaliser but failed to break the Woodbridge defence before the half, Half-time 0-1.
Ferry started again the brighter of the two teams with Ricardo pulling the strings in the defensive midfield role given to him, soon ferry turned good position into a goal as Jamie Lewis threaded the ball through for Maxi Sarigul to lob superbly giving the keeper no chance.1-1. Ferry were very much on top and it didn’t take long for them to take the lead with some good work down the left by Steve Ray to cut the ball back to Maxi who set up Jamie Lewis to thump the ball home. 2-1. Maxi then struck a beautiful half volley against the cross bar as we searched to put this game out of reach, Ryan Friel replaced Kev Jacobs on the left and immediately made an impact as he drove into the heart of the defence taking on two players to lay it off for Ricardo Phillips to place the ball into the corner of the net for his 14th goal of the season. Chances were still coming from Ferry with long range efforts close from Lewis and Ray, Danny Smith was also put through from a long ball from Kai which he failed to convert. The fourth and final goal came when Max battled for possession in the middle and passed inside to Jamie who hit a shot that looked easy for the keeper to deal with but it took an awkward bounce and crept in threw his legs. 4-1. A good win for Ferryboat in a game that wasn’t easy and showed that they may have the fight in them to challenge this season. On the other hand a poor game for the Ref which didn’t see him control the game once in 90 minutes and make same strange decisions.
Man of the match – Jamie Lewis and a close 2nd Maxi Sarigul.

Locomotive F.C vs. Ferryboat FC
08/03/10
ISFL League Match
0-8
WEATHER: COLD BUT SUNNY
REF: N/A
Cards – N/A
Ferryboat travelled the short distance up the A14 for a league fixture against a bottom of the league Locomotive who have only picked up 3 points all season, Ferry were struggling for numbers with several away and a few late call offs. But Manager Rod Ray had every faith in the starting 11 which even saw captain Steve Ray fail a late fitness test.
The match started with a very high tempo with Ferry dominating the midfield and it was only Loco’s counter attack that could have caused them a problem, Ferry’s constant probing soon paid off when a ball in from Lewis on the right wasn’t dealt with and Jacobs jumped at the chance to put the ball in the net. 0-1. Ferry soon doubled their lead with Lewis again down the right with another ball in to the box that Jacobs met with his head. 0-2. Some more poor defending from loco’s let Ferry in for their third, the ball was poorly cleared only to the feet of Smith who smashed the ball home. 0-3. The fourth goal came soon after and it was looking like ‘’how many will Ferryboat score today’’ It was Smith again who received a threw ball from Lewis where he then rounded the keeper and a player to put the ball in the empty net. 0-4. Ferry kept attacking and did not give Loco’s a sniff of the play, the fifth goal came from a corner from the right out swinging by Lewis and met perfectly by the head of the skipper Parry which the ball nestled nicely into the net for him to record his first ever competitive goal for the team. 0-5. Smithy completed his 1st half hat trick just before time to make it a very comfortable 6-0 Ferry lead at half time. 2nd half saw Ferry slow out the starting blocks, and it took 20mins for us to hit the back of the net again and it came through once again Jamie “put it on a plate” Lewis, when he went past his marker to put in a perfect cross for Maxi to score a superb diving header. 7-0.
The last goal of the game was made by Ryan Friel as he showed good skill on the ball down the left to get a shot off only for the keeper to save and gift Smith for his fourth and Ferry’s eighth. 8-0.
Man of the match – Danny Smith – 4 goals, enough said. Close 2nd was Jamie Lewis with his 5
assists and special mentions for Maxi, Kev & Parry for all scoring there 1st ever goal for the club.

Ferryboat FC vs. Unicorn FC
21/02/10
ISFL League Match
3-2
WEATHER: VERY WET & WINDY WITH SLEET
REF: STEVE SMITH
Cards – Ricardo
Ferryboat welcomed Unicorn to Walton Rec on a very wet Sunday morning, Steve Smith got the match underway with Ferry facing the wind. A 4-3-3 formation is what Ferry started with which was looking a good choice as the three central midfielders were snuffing out most Unicorn attacks. Ferry took the game to top of the league Unicorn but couldn’t make their chances pay with chances falling to Ray and Lewis, Unicorn defended well and it was them who broke the deadlock with a ball out wide left which looked suspiciously offside, linesman Barrell was over ruled and the winger cut it back for a simple tap in and for the goal to stand. 0-1. Unicorn had a few other scattered chances in the first half but failed to double their lead.
HALF TIME 0-1
Ferry came out for the 2nd half to a heavy down pour, but this didn’t put them of their game as they were determined to turn this game around and it took something special to do this as Ray received a ball inside from Lewis and side stepped his man and unleashed a 30yd shot that was unstoppable. 1-1. Ferry continued to press but it was Unicorn that took the lead once again when a cross from the right was not dealt with and once again the Unicorn striker had an easy tap in.1-2. Ferry found themselves chasing the match yet again and in the 68thminute the Unicorn keeper found himself out of goal dealing with a clearance, he made a hash of it and slipped in the wet conditions gifting Smith with an easy tap in to the empty net from 35yds. 2-2.
Then with 15 minutes left on the clock a bit of magic from Turley in the middle of the park saw him put a pin point pass through the defence to Lewis where he finished calmly one on one to make it 3-2 Ferryboat. Phillips later got booked for cleverly running down the clock by holding on to the ball, but it was yet again the Unicorn keeper that was the centre of attention as he seemed to take a swipe at young Phillips, but the ref Steve Smith thought that a yellow for Phillips was enough to deal with the situation. Ferry won’t mind too much as it was a well earned 3 points against a team that were yet to be beaten in the league this season.
MOTM – NEIL WOOBY - for a solid defensive, no nonsense performance and also a mention to Lee Parry who came a close 2nd.

14/02/10 - Hadleigh Goldstar vs Ferryboat
Ferryboat travelled to Hadleigh Goldstar for a cup quarter final with high hopes and a few changes to the line up saw Jacobs come in up top for the absent Clarke and Phillips return to the wing for Sarigui. A slow start and a high defensive line saw Ferryboat in early trouble though as Hadleigh put pressure on with a direct long ball game and they got the early goal while they were on top as an early ball from the right caught out Parry who lost his footing in the box allowing the Hadleigh Striker a some what easy finish with Algar given no chance. Ferry created few chances first half and Hadleigh's 3 man midfield were dominating which prevented Ferry from building attacks. Hadleigh soon countered to add a second goal which left an up hill task for the visitors. It was game on by half time though as Ferry broke quickly only to see Phillips brought down in the box which provided Ray with a chance to score his 3rd penalty in 2 games. 2-1 at halftime.
Ferry started the second half more fired up and they lifted their work rate to good effect as their extra energy saw them pull level. Smith scuffed an effort to the back post were the grateful Lewis side footed nicely past the keeper for his 6th goal of the season. At 2-2 Ferry were looking good and the smart money would have been on the away side taking victory but they eased off the gas and the game opened up with chances a plenty for both sides. Algar in the away goal was inspired and showed off his shot stopping ability while Ferry squandered various chances and were unlucky to see finishes from Ray, Smith and Jacobs ruled out for offside. Ferry knew it wouldn't be their day when Parry flicked a corner on to Ray 3 yards out but he could only strike the bar but the rebound fell to Turley who struck the post. Ferry pushed forward and threw everything at Hadleigh only to be caught on the break twice and end up loosing 4-2.
Algar was unlucky to be on the loosing side having pulled off some magnificent saves and carried on his excellent recent form to claim the Man of the Match award.
For Ferryboat it's a case of better luck next year for cup competitions.
07/02/10 - Trimley Rangers vs Ferryboat
A return to competitive action for the first time in nearly 2 months saw Ferryboat travel away to play Trimley Rangers in a cup game. Ferry were the quickest to start and took complete control of the game. Unfortunately they were unable to convert any of their chances even after a sustained period of pressure including multiple corners. Ferry's build-up play was impressive but the finally delivery was letting them down. Sarigui saw a header cleared off the line and Clarke and Smith missed chances from close range. Turley was pulling the strings in midfield and Ryan and Burt at full back were putting in solid performances in defence. Finally Ferry made the breakthrough when Smith was put through and his pace got him there only to be brought down in the box by the keeper who received a yellow card for his trouble as it was deemed that there was a covering defender. Captain Ray stepped up and put it safely to the keepers left for 1-0. Some bad defending late in the half saw the home team make it 1-1 with a close range finish after Ferry failed to clear their lines. Half time and Ferry came in feeling they should have had the game dead and buried.
A frantic start to the second half saw Trimley causing problems with their long ball game and Ferry had to make an early change with Bateman replacing Turley. Trimley's pressure started to tell as they struck the bar before taking a 2-1 lead with a good header from their centre midfielder. Ferry had it all to do but applied themselves well. Clarke made a brave lunge into a tackle but came off worse and would be replaced by Barrell on the bench who was carrying a knock himself. Ferry's chance to get back in the game came when Trimley had a player sent off for a two footed lunge on Ray and looked to make it count by changing to three at the back to make their dominance tell. Bateman missed a great chance and Smith put one wide but with 2 mins remaining and it seeming like Trimley would hold on Super sub Barrell got on the end of a cross and directed it past the keeper for 2-2. Needless to say he was mobbed by him team-mates as he hobbled back for the kick off.
Extra Time passed quickly as Ferry were again on top but couldn't find a way through. The shoot out saw Burt send the keeper the wrong way before Trimley dispatched their first. Ray scored powerfully for his second pen off the game and Algar stood firm to save a pen struck down the middle for a 2-1 Ferry advantage. Smith replicated Ray's penalty and Trimley managed to score for 3-2. Lewis calmly side footed his effort into the top right corner before Algar made sure that Sarigui and Ryan were not needed by saving down to his left.
Congratulations to the penalty takers and to Algar for his penalty saves. Ferry advance to face Hadleigh Goldstar in the quarter finals but they will need to be less complacent of lower league teams and punish teams when they are on top in games.
Matt Burt was awarded MOTM for a great display, Keep it up Matt.
Without a game since mid December Ferryboat had a friendly against Felixstowe Harpers to get some match practice and a bit of fitness. Harpers were dominated for most of the game but did manage to score first against the run of play when a corner was not properly cleared. it tool until the 75th minute for Ferry to level the game through James Turley with a toe poke after Parry had created the chance. Clarke sealed the win on 90 mins when he met a good cross on the volley. A good win but should have been a lot more but Ferry were just relieved to get a game and win under their belts. Sarigui put in a good performance and Ryan at left back claimed the MOTM award. Fingers crossed league action resumes soon.
13/12/09 - Taverners vs Ferryboat
Another strong turn out for Ferryboat meant they were able to field and strong eleven with 4 good options on the bench which was good news given the tough game Taverners put up early in the season in a 2-2 draw at Walton Rec.
It was Taverners who started the brightest although they could not convert their superior possession into attempts at goal. Ferryboat looked dangerous on the counter with Phillips and Ryan down the left linking particularly well. The few chances Ferry did create fell to Clarke, Smith and Ray but none were taken and the teams came in at half time locked at 0-0.
Ferry discovered their passing game at the start of the second half and they took the lead when Phillips broke on the left, beat his man and fed Clarke who's shot came back of the post but Phillips followed up well to knock in the rebound. Taverners made it 1-1 however when their right winger put in a great cross that left the Ferry defence flat footed and the Taverners Striker volleyed home.
Clarke then had a mixed couple of minutes when he was booked for dissent after a coming together with a Taverners player and moments later he went through on goal only to see his lob land narrowly wide. Ferry were in the ascendancy and looked the most likely to score next when the game took a turn for the worse with a series of controversial moments. First Taverners had a goal bound shot blocked with the upper arm of Ferry skipper Ray, then Phillips was booked for dissent which seemed to be a bad decision by the home assistant (not for the first time) and when the Referee took offence to Phillips spelling his name out loudly he produced and second yellow and Phillips was sent off. Clarke was then through on goal again only to be upended as he seemed certain to score and a penalty was given but no card. The home keeper accused Clarke of diving and picked up the Ferry striker, after a scuffle between the two players the Referee made another odd decision and booked both players meaning Clarke received a second yellow and Ferry were down to nine men. Ray showed great composure to step up and bury the penalty and Ferry had to try and hold on for the win. Turley came on for Bateman and Ferry set up with two banks of four to try and frustrate Taverners and hit on the break. A great chance came when Ferry broke and Smith and Ray combined to put Turley clear but the keeper came to Taverners rescue.
With only a minute left on the clock Ryan hung out a tired leg and tripped a Taverners player on the very line of the box but the referee deemed it to be a penalty and the Taverners captain put it away for another 2-2 between the teams.
It was heart breaking for Ferry after they felt they had done enough to hang on with 9 men. Motivation shouldn't be a problem as Ferry will look to put right some of the wrongs dealt to them. Ray was Man of the Match after a commanding Captains performance.
29/11/09 - Martlesham Old Boys vs Ferryboat
Ferryboat were able to call upon a 16 man squad strong in numbers and quality for an away game at Martlesham Old Boys. It was the second time Ferry had made the journey to Nacton this season after the reverse fixture was switched due to a mix up with the Ferryboat home pitch.
Ferry made the perfect start with skipper Ray slotting in Phillips who finished calmly when one-on-one to extend his impressive scoring record against MOB following his Hat Trick in the last meeting. The second goal wasn't long in coming after a Lewis cross from the right wasn't dealt with by the MOB defence, Smith pounced first and blasted a left foot shot on the half volley into the corner. Half time score 2-0 but manager Rod Ray felt it should have been more after a dominant first half display and a good team talk got the team going for the second half.
Smith's second of the game made it 3-0 soon after the break after his shot from outside the box was deflected in. Ireton came on at right back for Barrell and slotted in seamlessly. Lewis showed his skills down the right to beat his man and whip in a perfect cross for Smith to head home for his Hat Trick goal. Lewis then scored himself when he was put threw and only needed one touch before unleashing an effort into the far top corner. Phillips was replaced on the wing by Jacobs and the next Ferry goal came when Ray was not tracked from midfield and was put through by a Bateman ball over the top and although the keeper made a good save the ball dropped back to Ray who tapped home. Ferry did their best to make it interesting when the back four who had been largely untroubled all game went to sleep and allowed MOB two quick goals for 6-2. Order was restored before the end when a MOB own goal made it 7-2 after Turley's free kick had come back off the bar and Ray had two attempts to finish.
Hat Trick hero Smith took Man of the Match in a comfortable victory and took his season tally against MOB to 6 after another triple. Ferryboat continued their impressive recent form and need to keep working hard with some big games to come.
22/11/09 - Taverners Reserves vs Ferryboat
Ferryboat were on their travels in the one remaining cup they were still in and looking to make good progress. Ferry took control early on and proceeded to dominate the first half but frustratingly only managed a 1-0 halftime lead courtesy of a Clarke goal on 30 minutes despite numerous chances.
After changing into their finishing boots for the second half Ferryboat continued were they had left off first half and were able to put their chances away. First Smith doubled the Ferry advantage before turning provider for Lewis to make it 3-0 with a tap in to an open goal. Ireton replaced Parry and Jacobs came on for Turley so Ferry shifted Phillips into the centre on midfield and Jacobs going wide. Within 10 mins the changed paid off with Phillips in his new position unleashing a wind assisted 30 yard shot to lob the keeper and extend the lead further. Clarke then laid the ball off for Lewis to add his second of the game with a cool side footed finished and having started the scoring Smith then added his second to wrap up and 6-0 win. Ferry march on into the next round and Lewis was Man of the Match having scored twice and posed a constant threat all game.
08/11/09 - Ferryboat vs Shotley Rose
Ferryboat arrived at Walton Rec full of optimism for a good cup run this season and first up was Shotley Rose. Ferry hit their stride early and when Ray found Phillips with a precise pass the winger made no mistake for a 1-0 lead. Shotley were soon level when Ferry failed to clear the ball on three occasions leaving the shotley striker an easy tap in. Ray suffered a nasty blow to the back of the head an after recovering from some double vision was able to continue. Some sloppy play gifted Shotley possesion and they countered quickly, crossing in and heading past a stretching algar from 12 yards and taking the lead 2-1.
At half time Ferry switched to 3 in centre midfield and the wingers supporting Smith to try and counter the shotley attacks flowing through central midfield.
The formation change had the desired affect as Ferryboat started to limit the Shotley chances and work their way back into the game. An error ridden second half from Ferryboat would play into Shotley's hands however. First Ryan hung out a leg and tripped a Shotley player and a penatly and booking to boot were awarded. The penalty was put away with Algar being sent the wrong way. Shotley went 3-1 up when Parry tried to chest back to Algar only to see the ball find the net for an own goal. 4-1 soon followed and the game seemed over. Ferry rallied however and had hope when Lewis beat the last line of defence and cut it back for phillips for an easy finish, his and Ferry's second. Ray had to be replaced with Jacobs when his double vision returned but was later check out at hospital and would be ok despite suffering mild concussion. Phillips completed his hat trick when Smith found him 25 yards out and he finished into the corner. 4-3 and the comeback was on! Smith put Phillips in again soon after and he equalised for Ferry with a fantastic lob that went in off the bar. Barrell came on for Ireton with Burt reverting to right back and Barrell slotting in at centre back. A cruel late goal would ruin Ferry's day after Ryan pushed a Shotley player in the box and the penalty was dispatched in the same corner as the first. 5-4 Shotley. Hammond was sent on for Ryan after his 3rd warning whilst on a booking but Ferryboat were unable to find another equaliser and exit the cup early.
Phillips was MOTM after a display of quality finishing but after a bright attacking second half Ferryboat were left to rue their defensive errors.
25/10/09 - Ferryboat vs Locomotive
Ferryboat welcomed familiar opponents to Walton Rec in the shape of Locomotive. Confidence was high after back to back league wins and everyone was keen to keep that run going. For the first time in weeks Manager Rod Ray had a strong 15 man squad to choose from and elected to bring Ryan back in at left back and Bateman into Centre Midfield.
Locomotive in previous seasons always had a physical line up and would look to use it to their advantage and apply pressure with a direct playing style putting balls in the box but this side were a smaller and younger looking outfit and it wasn't long before Ferry were imposing their style of football on their opponents. The back four looked in determined mood and didn't want to give anything away with Algar directing events vocally from his goal. Bateman and Ray took control of the Middle early doors and had plenty of options in the form of full backs Ryan and Ireton, Wide men Lewis and Phillips and the front two of Smith and Clarke. Ferry made their dominance count midway through the first half when the committed Parry won a strong 50-50 challenge in the centre circle and collected the ball to play a great through ball to smith who coolly rounded the Loco keeper to slot in left footed for 1-0. Algar made a smart save with his feet to deny Loco their best chance of the half. Ferry stayed in control of the game but were unable to put away anymore chances before half time and were a bit disappointed to come in only one goal up but they felt that if they kept up the level of performance more goals would come.
Ferry started the second half brightly again and were able to repel anything Loco's threw at them and looked dangerous whenever they attacked. It was no surprise when they extended their lead after great work down the left from Ryan and Phillips lead to Phillips delivering a cross that left Smith the easy job of guiding his header past the keeper from a few yards out. Smith completed his hat trick soon after when Ferry attacked down the right flank this time and Ireton up from right back delivered a dangerous cross which caught the wind and the keeper could only tip onto the bar, the rebound fell to Smith who tapped home. Again Ferry pressed on not wanting to allow Loco's a way back into the game and with 20 minutes to go Ray was fouled after making a strong break from midfield and Phillips guided the resulting free kick into the top corner leaving the keeper no chance.
Loco's did manage to snatch two late goals by getting the ball forward early and capitalising when it broke loose in the box.
Ferryboat will be pleased with not only the team performance but the high level of individual performances. Stand out performers on the day were Ryan, Bateman, Ray and Phillips but Smith's Hat trick and all round display ensured he collected the Man of the Match award.
Now unbeaten in 3 Ferryboat are establishing themselves as title contenders in a strong league this year.
18/10/09 - Hadleigh RBL vs Ferryboat
Ferryboat turned out for an away game against hadleigh rbl still on a buzz from the belstead win. The starting line up included matty b playing centreback and james turley playing left back as ferryboat were down to bare minimum. Dingle was given a debut in the centremid with steven ray. Ferry also welcome backed danny smith up top with danny Clarke and ferrys to flare players Jamie and ricardo on either wing. Ferry started brightest with a lot of possession and crosses into the box but not causing to much harm to the hadleigh keeper. Although the same cant be said for there keeper clattering Jamie lewis after collecting and cross and nearly beheading danny Clarke claiming another. Ferry had a lot of play down the right with jimmy linking up with Jamie well and from jimmy bombing forward came the first ferry goal. A good 1-2 with danny Clarke saw jimmy through one-on-one with the keeper before smashing it home for ferry to deservedly take the lead. Hadliegh continued to attack on the counter with parry and burt soaking up all of there pressure masterfully. Ferry continued to dominate with ricardo having several headers saved and well defended from ferry crosses and dead balls. Steven ray and dingle were running the centre of midfield with ste winning numerous headers and passing between the two before passing out wide to attack down the wings. Ricardo giving the right back lots of troubles. Danny Clarke was put through with a masterful through ball from steven ray which he chested and controlled masterfully and smashed into the top corner from 25 yards to be given offside to everybodys amazement. Jamie lewis was put clean through after a jinking run from lee parry to go one-on-one only to attempt to lob the advancing keeper and see it go just over he probably should have scored. Half time-
Ferry weren’t overly happy at half time with several missed chances possible coming back to haunt them.
They carried on pushing second half with ste ray bombing forward at every chance to support the 2 strikers. Ste got caught and lost possession in the middle of the park with a lot of the ferry team forward but lee parry dealt with the threat of the counter well and prevented a goal. Another hadleigh attack saw matt burt save a goal on the line with a superb header from the top corner. Ferry broke up the left with Danny smith providing for Danny Clarke to finish from close range to make ferry’s lead a lot more comfortable. Ferry were lucky not to concede when everybody feel asleep and a quick corner was passed to the front post and the hadliegh forward blazed it over from 4 yards. James turely was continuing to provide ricardo with the ball to hassle the right back which worked, as the right back could not handle his footwork and was felled on the edge of the area on the left. Lewis took the free-kick and found the far right corner with a nicely taken free kick putting ferry 3-0 up. The second half both teams found it hard to get momentum going with a lot of stopping from the referee and 4 bookings to hadliegh mainly for decent. After several decisions in ferry’s favour the left back saw red and continued to rant at the ref and got his walking orders possibly spoiling a good game. Ferry had another goal disallowed as the keeper fumbled and Danny smith following up on his mistake with natural striker instincts only for the ref to give a fowl against him. Ferry tried to continue with there passing football and continue to cause problems but no more goals followed.
Well done to all the lads for a good game which was not the easiest with all the stop starting. Special note to the defence with a clean sheet! Lee parry man of the match for a faultless game and keeping the ferry defensive in shape with a few players out of position.
04/10/09 - Belstead Arms vs Ferryboat
Ferryboat came into an away game with Belstead Arms on the back of a defeat and two draws so they were keen to get back to winning ways. Ferry had a thin but strong squad of 12 players and lined up in a 4-4-1-1 formation with the returning Turley playing off Clarke up top.
After winning the toss and choosing to play up hill and against the wind first half Ferry had long range efforts from Ray, Bateman, Clarke and Phillips but were unable to trouble the home keeper. They did manage a goal in the first half only to have it ruled out for offside.
Against the run of play Belstead took the lead when their right sided midfielder played a quick 1-2 to burst clear and finish under the advancing Algar.
1-0 down at half time but not out of the game by any means Manager Rod Ray and Assistant Steve demanded that the team play with the required passion to get a result from the game and show the Ferryboat will to win.
Ferry responded as asked and having started the second half the brightest of the two teams they made it count 5 minutes in when Lewis delivered a pin point corner for Ray to head past the keeper for 1-1. 10 Minutes later Ferry took the lead when Turley fired in a cross come shot which deflected in off a Belstead defender. Ferry gifted Belstead an equaliser when they failed to deal with a cross that left a Belstead player to volley home for 2-2. It wasn't long before ferry restored their advantage with Lewis again the provider for Phillips to guide home a half volley. Barrell was suffering with a groin strain and was replaced by Ireton who went to right back and Burt slotted into the centre of defence along side Parry. 3-2 quickly became 4-2 when the ball fell to Clarke in the box who dispatched it for his first of the season. Belstead played a high line in an attempt to pressure Ferry and get themselves back in the game but a clever ball from Ray put the impressive Lewis through, beating the offside trap to calmly slot home to the keepers right for 5-2. Rather than sit back Ferry pushed on for more goals and they came courtesy of a Clarke header for his second of the game from a Phillips cross and a Bateman slide shot from inside the box after Clarke had laid the ball across. Final score Belstead Arms 2-7 Ferryboat.
A great performance from Ferryboat who will hope to carry the momentum into their next games and go on a winning streak.
Every player put in a great performance and Lewis was a stand out performer with 3 assists and a goal earning him the man of the Match award.
A special mention to Clarke who has put in an early contender for Goof of the season by getting lost before the game and only turning up 5 minutes before kick off....Cheers DAN!
27/09/09 -Whitton Maypole vs Ferryboat
Lineup and Rating vs Whitton Maypole 27/09/09
Ferryboat travelled to Whitton sports centre to face a Whitton Maypole side yet to drop a point this season. Ferryboat were missing a few players to injuries and suspension but were able to give Danny Clarke his first league start of the season. Burt moved into centre back alongside Barrell and Ray moved back into midfield to replace the unavailable Turley.
Ferryboat had the better of the early exchanges with Lewis in particular looking threatening down the left but were unable to score whilst on top. Whitton slowly started to work their way back into the game and were starting to get some joy with an extra man in midfield. It was half an hour in before the first goal arrived and it was Whitton who took the lead with a smartly taken goal dispatched into the corner after they had cleverly played their way through the middle. With the score 1-0 at half time and all still to play for Ferryboat changed to 4-5-1 with Young dropping into the holding role in midfield alongside Ray and Bateman and Phillips joining Lewis on the wings supporting Clarke up top.
Ferry's change in formation seemed to level the game up and both sides had to work hard for their chances. The next goal was always going to prove to be important and it was Ferryboat who struck with a Ray penalty after Lewis was taken down after beating his man in the box. Whitton responded well to Ferry equalising but the Ferry defence stood firm with Ireton, Burt, Barrell and Ryan all putting in great performances. Whitton did come close with a long range effort coming back off the bar and some goal saving tackles by Ryan and Barrell. Ferry had chances of their own with Lewis, Clarke and Phillips unable to convert but still both teams pushed hard for a winner leading to an open last 20 minutes.
The game finished 1-1 and was probably a fair result despite both teams having opportunities to win it.
Man of the Match was Sean Ryan who was tireless going forward and defensively but he was run close by Barrell who had a strong game in the centre of the defence.
20/09/09 -Ferryboat vs Taverners
Lineup and Ratings vs Taverners 20/09/09
Looking to bounce back from a heavy defeat the week before Ferryboat played host to Tavereners. Suffering a shortage of strikers Ferryboat started with Winger Phillips and returning midfielder Ray up front. They also gave a debut to Wooby at centre back.
Ferry were quickly out of the blocks and looking to get ahead early but Taverners held firm. Phillips received and early booking for descent which seemed harsh, especially as the referee continued to let other players off for the same offence.
20 minutes in Ferryboat worked an opening and Bateman found Ray on the edge of the box who released a shot that was deflected past the keeper for 1-0. As the half progressed Taverners found their way back into the match and it became a very evenly contested affair. They were rewarded when the ball reached a Taverners player on the edge of the box who struck it cleanly into the corner for 1-1. With half time approaching Jamie Lewis delivered a quality free kick and Ray rose highest to head into towards goal only to see the Taverners keeper somehow pluck it from the top corner. Half time score 1-1.
After the break Ferryboat pushed again to gain the upper hand and were starting to string their passing game together. Chances came and went as Taverners stood firm and also troubled Ferryboat with their quick counter attacks. Ferryboat did find a way through after an hour with Turley going past 3 players in midfield and slotting a fantastic through ball into Phillips in the box who slammed the ball left footed into the far corner. From then on it seemed like there would be only one winner as Ferry had all the play and created chances at will. Wood was introduced for Turley with Ray moving back into midfield and Wood going up alongside Phillips. Unfortunately it was Taverners who scored next capitalising with one of their quick counter attacks to free their striker who slotted the ball calmly under Algar who had made some smart saves during the match.
This spurred Ferryboat on and they searched for a winner in vain as Young had a chance cleared off the line and Phillips and Wood were unable to convert one-on-ones. Ireton was brought on in place of Young on the right of Midfield for the last 20 minutes.
Ferry carved out yet more chance with Wood hitting the target with an overhead kick and Parry and Wooby unable to connect with a Lewis Corner as the ball squeezed wide. The game ended 2-2 and Bateman was awarded Man of the Match for his work rate, dominance in the air and good passing display.
13/09/09 -Kirton vs Ferryboat
Lineup and Ratings vs Kirton 13/09/09
The second league game of the season saw an early clash between rivals Kirton and Ferryboat at Kirton Rec. Ferryboat made a sloppy start gifting Kirton the ball from the kick off but were lucky Kirton could not capitalise. That seemed to set the tone for the first half with Ferry regularly surrendering possession and making defensive errors, particularly letting the ball bounce in and around the box. Kirton took advantage inside the first 10 minutes and continued to score at regular intervals up till half time were they led 5-0. Ferryboat did create a few chances first half, most notably Phillips connecting with a Smith cross but unfortunate to see the ball fly straight into the keepers hands.
The second half was a more even contest but the early goal Ferry needed eluded them. The best opportunity of the game for Ferryboat came when Phillips was put through one on one with the keeper only to be bundled to the floor just outside the box. As the last man he could easily have seen red but the Referee decided only to award a Free kick outside the box. Smith put a difficult chance just over with his knee from a deep cross but the goal never came. Both sides saw goals disallowed for offside, ferryboat's came from a great strike from Bateman on the edge of the box but it was Kirton who would score again late and cap off a heavy defeat.
Kirton played well on the day and showed their class but Ferryboat will feel they showed them too much respect and let them play.
Motivation shouldn't be a problem next week as Ferryboat look to bounce back at home against Taveners and every player will know they can do better and will want to put in a performance.
06/09/09 -Ferryboat vs Martlesham Old Boys
Lineup and Ratings vs Martlesham Old Boys 06/09/09
It was an unusual start to the new season as both teams and the referee turned up at Walton Rec to find that the nets were not up and the changing rooms had not been unlocked. In a show of sportsmanship from Martlesham and understanding from the ref the game was moved to Martleshams home ground at Nacton Rec and the kick off delayed.
Once the game was underway it was played at a good pace with both teams playing some attractive football. It was Martlesham that were making the more incisive attacks and after 15 minutes got themselves in front after Ireton, who seemed perfectly placed to clear, was unlucky to see the ball bounce over his head off the hard ground for the Martlesham Striker to slam into the corner for 0-1. Ferryboat didn't let their heads drop and lifted the tempo, closing down Martlesham and applying great pressure. It wasn't long before Ferry were back on level terms when an Ireton through ball found Phillips who lifted the ball cleverly over the on rushing keeping with a little dink. It was 2-1 to Ferry not long after as they kept up their pressing game and forced a mistake from an Algar long kick and Phillips finished cleverly again. After 30 mins the injured Hammond had to be replaced with Barrell coming on for him at the back. Half time came with Ferryboat on top and 2-1 up.
Turley had to be replaced in midfield by Johnson at half time after picking up a Knee injury.
The second half played out much as the first half ended and although Martlesham worked hard and carved out some half chances, Ferry defend well and passed the ball well. The supply to the front two was of a good quality and allowed them to terrorise the Martlesham back four. Smith got on the score sheet after a defencive mix up and added another soon after when Phillips showed great feet to play him in for the simplest of left foot finishes. After an hour Lewis came off with cramp and Burt came onto the right of midfield with Young switching to the left.
Both Strikers went on to record their hat tricks, Phillips with another perfectly exectuted lob and Smith after cutting in field from the edge of the box and finding the corner despite scuffing the ground.
A great Ferryboat performance back to front with Smith just edging Phillips to Man of the Match. Confidence can be taken into a big match next week against defending champions Kirton.
30/08/09 - Ferryboat vs Felixstowe Dolphins
Squad vs Felixstowe Dolphins 31/08/09
Ferryboats last pre season friendly saw them up against Felixstowe Dolphins at Walton Rec. Ferry were christening their brand new Kit supplied by sponsors BBS Waste Management Ltd and looking for a good win and more importantly a good performance before the season starts.
The starting line up was Algar, Ireton, Parry, Hammond, Ryan, Lewis, Ray, Bateman, Friel, Smith and Clarke in a 4-4-2 with Burt, Young and Johnson on the bench.
After an early start and a good team talk Ferryboat came out of the blocks quickly and were playing the kind of football Manager Rod Ray had been asking for with short passing triangles and plenty of play going down both flanks.
Good early chances were created but none taken and after 10 mins Danny Clarke turned past 2 players in the box only to see the keeper smother the ball at his feet. Unfortunately he twisted his Knee in the process and had to limp off taking no further part in the game. Johnson came into midfield with Ray moving up front.
Ferry did take the lead after a good cross from Lewis on the right was headed home by Smith. Unable to build on their lead for the rest of the half they came in 1-0 up.
The second half saw Burt and Young introduced onto the right in place of Ireton and Lewis. Ferry looked to carry on their good display from the first half and convert a few more of their chances. The opportunity arrived to add to the lead when a penalty was awarded for a handball and Ray smashed it down the middle past Brother Matt, who was standing in for the Dolphins who had no keeper, for 2-0. It wasn't long before Ray added a second and his teams third after a low cross was scrambled across the box for an easy tap in.
Ferryboat pushed hard for more goals and were playing some great football but were denied by the woodwork and good keeping. First Sean Ryan collected a short corner, came inside and struck a right foot shot against the corner of post and bar. A succession of corners followed and one was struck against the bar from a Young header and another fell to Friel who from a tight angle struck the woodwork again. Then a great passage of football followed with a great cross from the right being collected by Ray on his chest who volleyed low to the keepers right only for Matt Ray to deny his brother a Hat Trick with an outstanding save, the ball rebounded to Friel who could only guide his header just over on the stretch.
Dolphins stuck to their task well and caused problems all day with goal kicks and long throws. Another long throw late on was allowed to bounce in the box, not cleared and a Dolphins player was able to guide it into the corner from the penalty spot to give his side a consolation.
Joint Man of the Match award goes to Sean Ryan and Ryan Friel who showed great work rate, passing and were a constant threat down the left side.
26/08/09 - Walton Rovers vs Ferryboat
Squad vs Walton Rovers 27/08/09
Ferryboat turned up at Walton Rec as the away team for an evening friendly against Walton Rovers. The conditions were not favourable for attractive passing football with the wind swirling and the dry, hard ground making the bounce awkward to put it kindly.
Ferry started with a 4-4-2 of Algar, Burt, Wooby, Parry, Ryan, Turley, Ray, Young, Lewis, Clarke and Smith. The bench was Barrell, Hammond, Ireton, Wood, Johnson and Friel.
Both teams started brightly and created a few half chances with the game being played at a good tempo. It was Ferryboat who struck first, winning a free kick just outside the box, and having had a loosener saved earlier Clarke dispatched it left footed into the corner. Ferry should have taken control of the game and kept the ball but instead they allowed Walton back into the game, too often giving possession away which allowed Walton to put pressure on the Ferryboat defence with their direct style of football. Walton levelled the game at 1-1 when a through ball found its way to Travis Smith who lifted the ball over Algar and into the net. Walton felt they should have had the lead before half time when they had a goal disallowed for offside.
1-1 at half time wasn't too disappointing for Ferry playing against the wind and Manager Rod Ray urged his players to close down quicker and keep hold of the ball better.
The second half started much as the first half had ended but quarter of an hour in, 30 seconds of play changed the game. After a sustained period of pressure from Ferryboat corners, free kicks and long throws, resulting in numerous goal mouth scrambles, eventually Ferryboat managed to force the ball 2 FEET! over the line only for the referee to wave play on without even consulting the opposition linesman who was flagging for the goal. Walton then counter attacked immediately , whch they had done to good effect all evening, and won a penalty which the ref managed to see was in the area from forty yards away!! Cheers Ref!!! Jason May stepped up and converted the spot kick for Walton.
For the rest of the game Ferry continued to apply pressue with Walton trying to use their pace on the counter attack using long balls, flick ons and through balls. Danny Clarke nearly equalised when he turned smartly on the edge of the box and powered in a shot that the Walton keeper tipped over the bar. Skipper Steve Ray also came close minutes later when he met a cross well and guided a header towards the corner but again the Walton keeper was up to the task and pushed it round the post for corner number 31(ish)!! Walton held on for a 2-1 victory.
Another good test and workout and although Ferry feel hard done by they know they can play better and will want to up their game for the last pre season friendly on sunday against Felixstowe Dolphins.
23/08/09 - Ferryboat vs California
Subs = Danniel Hammond
Ferry’s team of 12 were slightly over shadowed by the strong 17 player squad California travelled with. The game started off with a very fast tempo with Cali having the better of the ball frustrating the Ferry players, but from the start the referee showed that he was going to have a big part to play in the game after booking Ferry players Lee Parry and Danny Clarke early on, Lee for a miss timed tackle and Dan for a lunge tackle on the keeper which to be fair to Dan, he had every right to go for. The ref was clearly making a mockery of the game and using his powers a bit too freely, it was a friendly after all!!
California soon took the lead with their best player on the field picking the ball up in the midfield running past two players and slotting into the path of the striker who calmly slotted past the out rushing Algar. Then after about 30 minutes of play Lee parry was dismissed from the field of play for a 2nd bookable offence after he committed a foul and pushed the ball back to where the foul first took place, only for the ref to get his positioning wrong and send him off for apparently kicking the ball away, a 2nd yellow was displayed for dissent. Cheers ref!!!!
Cali later doubled their lead after a corner was poorly cleared leaving a smiply volley home.
Ferry’s chances were slim but they were always looking dangerous on the counter when Ray released a long ball down the left for Lewis to latch on to, his pass found Clarke who unleashed what looked like an unstoppable shot only for the keeper to pull off a magnificent save. Half time 0-2.
The 2nd half saw ferry change to a 4-4-1 with Lewis supporting Clarke whenever he could and Hammo also replacing Burt at the back. Ferry’s 10 man team came out fired up after a strict but positive team talk from manager Rod Ray and it seemed to have worked as they kept possession well creating good chances. Ferry scored early in the second half when the ball was picked up by Bateman who found Turley wide, he then cut inside beating his man to cut it back to Clarke who shot past the keeper with a powerful RIGHT foot shot.
Ferry levelled the score line when good work from James Turley down the right flank resulted in him winning a free kick which was floated in by Dan Clarke to the back post where Steve Ray leaped to finish with his head. Ferry’s 10 men pushed on for a winner with good shots from Lewis and Ray, Dan Clarke also found himself through one on one which looked far too easy for Clarkeys liking where a heavy touch let him down. 5 minutes from time Ferry thought they had won the game when Clarke turned and shot all in one movement, only to see the shot cannon off the bar and over. Full time 2-2
There were many positives to take from the game, mainly that we have to switch on from the start and play our game 10 men or not, not too get on the refs back no matter how suspect the decisions (it doesn’t help with him playing for the other team) and the fighting spirit in the 2nd half which saw us claw back a 2 goal deficit and nearly win it. Good strong performance’s from Barrell, Ryan and Bateman and not to forget a 45 minute clean sheet for Hammo in the 2nd half. Well done mate, kept it tight.
Man of the match – Dan Clarke. For his fighting 2nd half attitude and terrorising their defence.
17/08/09 - Ferryboat vs Trojans

Ferryboat turned up to face Trojans with a depleted line up. With Only 12 players available manager Rod Ray chose a 4-5-1 formation consisting of Algar in goal, a back four of Ireton, Johnson, Parry and Ryan. Bateman, Young and Ray made up the midfield with Lewis and Friel in the wide positions supporting the lone striker Smith. Barrell started on the bench.
Ferry made a sluggish start and were punished early on when Trojans scored with almost the first chance of the game, Calum Barker vollying into the corner after Ferry failed to clear their lines.
Ferry tried hard to work their way back into the game and fashioned a chance through Friel and Bateman for Steve Ray who drove the ball under the Trojans keeper from the edge of the box. Trojans stuck to their task well and Gian Barker soon restored the lead when he lobbed the out rushing Algar. The goal had been coming as Trojans put pressure on with set pieces and Ferry struggled to clear the ball properly. Ferry were able to Level again just before half time after Danny Smith pounced on a sliced kick by the keeper and half volleyed home on the slide.
Ferryboat reverted to a 4-4-2 in the second half in an attempt to take control of the game but never managed to get their usual passing game going which gave Trojans encouragement. It was Trojans who got the winner with a cross diverted into his own net by Ireton as he stooped to clear with his head.
Every player knew they could do better and will look to improve massively in the next game.
Some positives were another 90 minutes of fitness and solid performances from Bateman, Smith, Ryan, Young and Friel.
09/08/09 - Ferryboat vs Underwoods

Ferryboat welcomed new side Underwoods to Walton Rec for the 2nd pre season friendly of the season. There was a good atmosphere for a game everyone was looking forward to. There was plenty of familiar faces in the Underwoods line up and Ferry started with Algar, Wooby, parry, Ryan, Lewis, Johnson, Turley, Friel, Smith and Clarke with Ray, Wood, Young, Bateman, Hammond and Barrell on the bench.
Ferry started the brightest and were applying great pressure to Underwoods when they had the ball and were a constant threat when in possession themselves, especially down the left side with Friel and Ryan. The pressure paid off after 10 minutes when Turley played a great through ball for Lewis to speed onto and lift over the on rushing Matt Ray in the underwoods goal.
Another great chance fell Danny Smith's way minutes later after great work from Friel and Ryan put Clarke in to square to Smith who was unable to convert a difficult chance.
Underwoods then came back into the game applying the kind of pressure on the ball that Ferry had used to good affect early in the game. This again paid off when they stole the ball in midfield and broke quickly to square the ball to the skipper who rolled it past the unfortunate Algar. Underwoods finished the half the strongest and nearly made their dominance count when the struck the post from the edge of the box. The first half finished 1-1.
The second half was evenly matched with both side having good chance to win the game. Underwoods went close with a Will Burton curling effort and Shaun Pugh had a one on one. Ferry played the ball around well and nearly capitalised with Danny Clarke putting an effort just wide and nearly scoring a header. lee Parry had a solid performance at the back showing his strength in the tackle, the air and on the ball.
Rob Wood had a chance to win it at the death after Ferry stole the ball and crossed only for Matt Ray to tip his guided shot over the Bar. In the end a draw was a fair result and both teams left happy after a good game and some more fitness under the belts.
James Turley picked up the Man of the Match award for his all round game and effort as well as some quality touches.
02/08/09 - Ferryboat vs The Raven

A bright sunny morning met the teams as Ferryboat and The Raven got their pre season matches underway at Walton Rec.
With Manager Rod Ray unavailable due to work commitments, Assistant manager Steve Ray took charge looking to get the new season of to a good start.
Ferryboat started with new keeper Kai Algar between the sticks, a back four of Matt Burt, Dan Hammond, Neil Wooby and Sean Ryan. Across the midfield were Jimmy Ireton, Paul Johnson, James Turley and Ryan Friel, with the two Dan’s, Clarke and Smith, up top.
The opening 10 minutes saw Ferryboat start brightly with some good passing and some sharp tackles from Ireton and Turley. Danny Clarke committed one of his trademark fouls after only 10 minutes and thought twice about giving stand in ref Steve Ray some ‘stick’ but thought better of it.
It was the Raven who struck first though with a good strike past Algar midway through the half. Ferryboat continued to boss possession but were unable to find a way past a strong Raven defence and rarely forced an opening.
The Raven struck again towards the end of the half to extend their lead, collecting a punched clearance from Algar and slotting a neat finish into the corner.
The first half drew to a close with Ferryboat the more dominant team in possession but The Raven deserved their lead for their strong defence and clinical finishing.
Ferryboat made changes at half time giving run outs the new players Rob Wood, Andy Young and Travis Smith, with Ray introducing himself. The second half line up was Algar, Burt, Wooby, Hammond, Smith, Wood, Young, Ray, Ryan, Clarke and Smith in a 4-4-2.
Ferry again started brightly and it wasn’t long before they reduced the deficit with Clarke heading home after a Ray header came back off the bar. Parity was restored soon after when Wood swung in a near post corner that was flicked on by Clarke into the path of Ray who slotted home. Ferryboat continued to pressure the Raven who again stood firm at the back.
The Breakthrough came for Ferryboat when a goal mouth scramble resulted in Clarke squeezing home for his second of the match.
Ferry then tightened up not wanting to give the lead away and were happy to try and hit Raven on the break with the hard working Smith working the channels and dragging the defence around and Clarke who tormented the back four every time he received the ball. Johnson, who replaced Ray in midfield, was putting everything on the line to defend, even blocking a goal bound effort with his face!!
Parry, nursing an ankle injury, came on at the back for Hammond for the last 20 minutes and slotted in comfortably.
Clarke completed his hat trick in style when Young put him through on the counter attack for him to lob the on rushing keeper with the outside of his left boot.
Ferryboat held out comfortably for a 4-2 win against a Raven side who we’re sure will do well in their first season.
A solid performance to improve on from Ferryboat who can take positives from seeing Parry’s ankle come through ok, Burt play his first game in nearly a year having returned from travelling and a solid performance from Algar in goal who kicked well and was a vocal presence at the back.
Other performances of note came from Ireton and Ryan on the wings who linked up well and an assured first game from Wooby.
Man of the Match goes to Danny Clarke for a well taken hat trick and a big thank you to The Raven for stepping in late minute and providing a Referee for the second half.
